LJUBLJANA MBA, Women for Women with Špela Poklukar

LJUBLJANA MBA Alumni Špela Poklukar shared insights into why she selected the program and the significant impact it has had on her career trajectory.

What was the biggest change in how you think about business after the MBA, and what part of the program triggered that shift?

While I cannot pinpoint a single moment that triggered this change, there was a tremendous transformation in how I think about business—one that happened gradually with every lecture. I come from an engineering background, and my work was focused on various aspects of digital transformation: projects, customers, teams, skills, and capabilities. The MBA opened up entirely new perspectives on business and organisations—from finance to culture, people, operations, marketing, creative process, business environment, and what not. The complexity of this whole new world captivated my engineering mind and was definitely one of the key factors that led me to change my career path, take the risk, and start my own business.

How did the MBA shape your leadership style, and what did you learn about leading people that you didn't learn through engineering or data work?

The leadership theory taught at Ljubljana MBA—emphasising trust, respect, psychological safety, and accountability—is deeply aligned with my own values and philosophy, which made it easy for me to absorb the material. As an engineer, I operate more effectively when I can place structure around my beliefs, and this is exactly what the MBA leadership courses provided. They gave me a framework within which my intuition makes sense and from which I can lead with confidence.

How did learning alongside classmates from different industries and backgrounds influence your thinking or decision-making?

The diversity of the class struck me from the very first session. Having spent most of my career surrounded by engineers who think in similar terms, many of my MBA colleagues' contributions initially felt unfamiliar. I did not always understand their perspectives or their reasoning. But through numerous examples, I witnessed how these diverse contributions truly make a difference—more blind spots get uncovered, solutions become more robust, and risks become clearer. I left the program with a deep appreciation for human diversity, and it strengthened my belief in the value of DEI practices.

If you could give one piece of advice to future Ljubljana MBA participants who come from technical backgrounds, especially women, what would it be?

Do what you do best: be open, listen, observe, and analyse. You will emerge from this experience richer than you ever imagined possible.
